After visiting the largest waterfall in Wisconsin, we finally arrive at a Great Lake!

After a great trip up the Mississippi we headed toward Lake Superior. We took a scenic route off of the Mississippi and headed due north just miles east of Minnesota into Wisconsin. We stopped for the night at Pattison State Park, about 20 miles south of the lake. The park is home to Big Manitou Falls, the highest waterfall in the state of Wisconsin and the fourth highest waterfall east of the Rockies. Big Manitou Falls is 165 feet high and the nearby Twin Little Manitou Falls is 31 feet high.

Waterfalls are always enchanting, and BMF was no exception. It was hard to see all of the falls due to the trees and terrain, but it was worth the short hike from the campgrounds to view it. After viewing the falls, we made our way back to the campground and packed up to continue the drive north. We headed east just south of the city of Superior and got our first glimpse of Lake Superior after a bit of a drive.

It was getting late in the afternoon and we had no idea where we would camp for the night until we came upon a small campground right on the shore of the lake near the town of Herbster. We made the check out to the city of Clover, but I have yet to know where Clover is…we were just down the road from Herbster…? Our site was perched out near the shore and gave us a great view of the spectacular sunset the Lake graced us with.

We fell asleep listening to the waves washing up on the shore twenty yards away from us. The next morning was foggy with moisture from the fog on everything. This campsite on the lake was one of our fond memories of the trip. It was a quiet and serene initial stop on our trip along the Great Lakes.

Next: On to Bayfield and a ferry ride to Madeline Island (almost the Apostle Islands!)
